Occultism & the Art of Asking Questions

To study the history of occultism is to study a history of questions: what is knowledge, who is allowed to possess it, and why do symbols endure long after the societies that created them have disappeared?
Hermetic texts, alchemical imagery and initiatory traditions belong to different historical settings. Treating them as a single, unbroken secret tradition can be tempting, but the evidence deserves more care. Dates, translations, authorship and the circumstances of transmission matter.
Personal interpretation can enrich a reading of a symbol. It cannot, by itself, establish what that symbol meant to everyone in the past. I am interested in that tension: between the documented history of an idea and the intimate experience of encountering it.
